Dr. Lora Burnett is a historian of American thought and culture and a full-time history professor at our local community college. She was raised in the Baptist tradition, confirmed in the Episcopal Church in 1991, and ordained to the ministry in the Baptist tradition in 2003. She is happy to serve as a lay minister in the Episcopal Church.
Dr. Burnett is a graduate of Stanford University and the University of Texas at Dallas. In her classroom teaching, Dr. Burnett introduces students to the most current historical scholarship on both the American past and the history of the Western world and engages students in the philosophy of history as a moral inquiry.
As a professor, Dr. Burnett practices affirming presence for her students of all faith traditions and none, and models one possibility of intellectual life for a person of faith. Her own struggles as a student to come to terms with the relationship between faith and free intellectual inquiry have allowed her to teach and discuss difficult topics with her students with gentleness and insight. She is delighted to assist our church in seeking ways to address the economic, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual needs of college students and college professors in our community.
